Ask which island was busiest this week and two reasonable calculations give different answers. STEAL THE BRAINROT leads our sample by average hourly peak. PILLARS leads by the middle recorded hour. The difference matters when you are looking for a populated session rather than the largest event-sized spike. Here is what our October 19 snapshot shows.

60 of 64 catalog islands met the minimum of 135 / 168 hourly observations.
01 / The middle-hour leader
PILLARS moves from third to first
PILLARS placed third by mean hourly peak, at 18,726, behind STEAL THE BRAINROT and GO UP FOR BRAINROTS. Sort the same eligible sample by median and PILLARS takes first place with 17,950. Its mean and median are close, while its largest hour reached 37,643. For someone choosing a party session, that is a useful reason to inspect PILLARS: the middle of its recorded week was busy, not just the highest hour. These figures describe the island across its sessions; they do not tell you how many people will join your particular lobby.
Mean 18,726Median 17,950Peak 37,643
Use the median to compare the middle of each island’s recorded week. Then check the current activity and the map’s group format before joining.
STEAL THE BRAINROT recorded six hourly peaks of at least 100,000, including a maximum of 519,571. Across 167 recorded hours its mean was 30,692, but its median was 16,584. The mean was about 85% higher than the median because the largest values pull it upward. That does not make either number wrong. The mean describes all observed hours together; the median puts less weight on a few very large values. This feed does not explain what caused the spikes, so we are not attributing them to an update, event, or particular creator action.
Mean 30,692Median 16,584Peak 519,571
A peak answers how large the busiest recorded moment was. It is a poor substitute for the size of a typical recorded hour.
Lucky Block Pillars averaged 447 in its hourly peaks, with a median of 444 and a maximum of 896. It had the largest mean among our eligible party maps in the 20–499 band. Its close mean and median contrast with the spike-heavy example above, even though the audience is much smaller. Put it beside PILLARS when investigating party formats, then use the official listings to compare the actual rules. A smaller island-wide audience does not necessarily mean a smaller match, easier opponents, or shorter queues.

Sorted by mean among eligible maps. These are hourly concurrent-player peaks, not unique players, visits, or ratings. The full catalog comparison is available below as a download.
We used saved hourly peak-concurrency observations from Epic’s public Data API. Every island uses the same UTC window. We keep one valid observation per island and hour, exclude the unfinished hour, and leave missing observations empty. Our catalog is a curated sample of 64 islands; this is not a ranking of every Fortnite island.
Mean and median
The mean sums recorded hourly peaks and divides by recorded hours. The median is the middle recorded peak (or the average of the middle two). Displayed results are rounded to whole players.
Coverage
At least 135 of 168 possible hours are required for comparisons. Missing source observations are not zeroes. Even qualifying maps can have different missing hours, so the comparisons remain approximate.
Selection
We compare the eligible island with the largest median hourly peak, the island with the largest mean, and the largest mean among eligible party maps averaging from 20 to below 500. These are explicit selection rules, not gameplay ratings.
Within-week change in the download
This compares the last 84 hours with the first 84. Each half needs at least 68 observations and the first half must average at least 100. Weekends, updates and other factors may influence the pattern. It is not a week-over-week growth rate or a forecast.
What these records cannot establish
Reasons for spikes, gameplay quality, unique players, individual retention, and XP outcomes require different evidence.
This issue was calculated directly from Epic API responses retrieved on October 19 in Chicago (October 20 UTC). The available query began at 04:00 UTC on October 13, leaving the first hour of the report window unobserved. Three island requests returned 404, and one other island had only 69 valid hours. Those four islands are excluded from comparisons. A missing API result does not establish whether an island is playable. The downloads preserve all valid observations, including those from the excluded island.
Outside the comparison: THE BACKROOMS ESCAPE (69/168 hours); 💎TU MARBELLA💎 PARTY ROYALE (0/168 hours); +1 Escape a Brainrot (0/168 hours); Steal An Egg 🥚 (0/168 hours).

Choose the session behind the number
Start with a gameplay goal, compare the median and mean for a sense of the recorded activity, then check today’s map page. For a group deciding between random-item party rounds and focused duo practice, our PILLARS and Piece Control guides explain the difference in the session itself. Activity can help you find candidates. It does not measure enjoyment or XP earned by an individual player.
